Last year, Richard Green had a hole in one at the Pro-Am, in the lead up to the Oates Vic Open at 13th Beach Golf Links. He went on to win the Men’s event and his Norwegian fiancée, Marianne Skapnord, the Women’s – an exceptional feat, made even more poignant as they also announced that 13th Beach was to be their new home.
As a member at Kooringal Golf Course in Altona I feel as if I have a close connection with Richard as he was born in Williamstown and played at Kooringal in his early days. Isn’t it odd the way we conjure up ownership of personalities even though we’ve never met them?
But I digress, back to 13th Beach Golf Links.
Being partial to the odd bit of retail therapy, it just happens that my favourite golf shop is at 13th Beach. Last year they decided to stock my neckwarmers and sungloves after admiring women from Latrobe Golf Club wearing them on the course in Winter.
Recently, Sabrina, the retail manager asked me ‘would you be interested in having a display of gloves for the Vic Open?’
Would I? This is exactly what I had been hoping for – a chance to get my sungloves in front of fellow golfers following the field, or heaven forbid, worn by some of the sun-smart players.
The gloves and display are ready and look a little quirky but hey I’m all for some ‘look at me’ on and off the course…perhaps my ten minutes of fame eh?
Regretfully, I won’t be able to watch any of the Vic Open this year as I’m expecting to be up to my knees in powder snow in Japan wearing my SJ neckwarmer and beanie to combat the -10°C temperature. Brrrr!
Until next time, sayonara!
The Oates Vic Open at 13th Beach Golf Links starts 4-7 February 2016.
