Tips for protecting your skin from the sun

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. In 2011, more than 2000 Australians died from this almost entirely preventable disease.

Fortunately, being SunSmart is a simple and effective way to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.

Cancer Council provides guidance on how much sun you need and how to protect yourself from getting too much sun exposure. We also offer a range of high quality, affordable sun protection products to help keep you safe from the sun’s damaging UV rays.

Protect your skin

For best protection, we recommend a combination of sun protection measures:

  1. Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Sleeves to cover arms when cycling or golfing.
  2. Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun.
  3. Slap on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears. Or a cycle beanie under your helmet.
  4. Seek shade.
  5. Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian Standards
